Underground Mining Training
Depending on your individual readiness, we have several training options available. You can train for direct entry as an underground miner, or decide if mining is the best career path for you by training in the simulator, visiting a workingunderground mine at the Norcat training facility, or by exploring all career options through our new Foundations program.
For clients who are ready to go to work in the underground mine, LATP offers a 4 week training program provided by Norcat in Sudbury, Ontario. The first 2 days of training are held at the Norcat Facility in Sudbury where you will complete safety training in the computer lab and be outfitted with your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The rest of the 4 weeks is hands-on training in the mine located in Onaping, Ontario. Monday Friday 7am 4pm daily. When possible, groups of trainees will be accompanied by a designated LATP Liaison. During this training LATP and VALE will attempt to arrange a visit to working underground mine to provide the true experience of working in a busy, noisy underground mine. LATP covers all costs of the training including airfare, ground transportation, accommodations, meal allowance, tuition, PPE. A living allowance may also be provided based on the situation of each individual trainee.

- Mine Exposure
For clients who are unsure if Underground Mining is the best choice, the LATP offers an exposure visit to an underground mine. This program is currently being delivered through Norcat in Sudbury, Ontario. Groups of trainees, accompanied by a designated LATP Liaison, will travel to Sudbury and spend 3 days learning about safety procedures in a classroom setting and then visit the training mine for short hands-on experience alongside other Underground Miner trainees. LATP covers all costs of the training including airfare, ground transportation, accommodations, meal allowance, tuition, personal protective equipment (PPE). A small living allowance is also provided and based on the situation of each individual trainee.
About Norcat - Sudbury
- Mining Simulator
For clients who are not ready to go underground, the LATP also offers simulator training through the College of the North Atlantic in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The simulator has monitors that surround the trainee who sits at a vehicle control panel. Trainees will experience the sound and vibration of the truck as they navigate the tunnels and equipment underground. Trainees will travel to the College campus and spend 2 days learning about the operation of a haul truck in both a classroom setting and hands-on in the simulator. LATP covers all costs of the training including airfare, accommodations, meal allowance, tuition, and a small stipend.
- Mining Foundations
For those who are still exploring their options for future careers, and may have little or no industry experience, the LATP is offering "Mining Foundations", delivered by the College of the North Atlantic in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Since there are many career paths associated with the mining industry, participants in this program will gain a general understanding of the many job possibilities and related requirements for employment in the mining industry. This 6 week training includes experiential learning in the underground mine simulator, as well as hands-on skills development in the College trades shops. Participants will develop specific individual career action plans to guide them in achieving their career goals. The first delivery of this program will be in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with subsequent deliveries planned for Aboriginal/coastal communities. (Minimum requirement for this program is proof of Grade 9 completion.)
